Muddy Waters Says: Rub My Root! (My John The Conqueror Root)

Patients, not a doctor nor a nursemaid here at the asylum was born on the seventh hour, on the seventh day. Needless to say, today we caught a contageous case of lucky mojo by getting’ our sterilized gloves on a dose of John the Conquer Root. You know patients, John the Conqueroo-that glorious magical herb that will make yer hoodoo blues go by the wayside. Yer pistol may snap, yer mojo is frail, but you rub yer root, yer luck will never fail.

You’ve heard about it on the Willie Dixon standard, “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man”:

I got a black cat bone, I got a mojo too,
I got a John the Conquer root, I'm gonna mess with you,

Boom!

How about on Bo Diddley’s, “I’m A Man”?

I goin' back down,
To Kansas to
Bring back the second cousin,
Little John the conqueroo.

Double boom!

Today the asylum is going to get yer rock 'n roll stethoscopes movin' and groovin' to the doctors’ and nursemaids’ favorite bluesmen. The foot stompin' rusted wire blues fury from Muddy Waters has been givin' us the delta groove down to the bone.

Written by Willie Dixon and recorded at Chess in 1964, “My John The Conquer Root” by Muddy is a classic blues tale of chewing John the Conqueroo and catching a classic case of having the tides turn yer way. You might be on trial for crashing a clown car... you walk into the courtroom with a little John the Conqueroo and you win the case.

We recently discovered, “My John The Conquer Root” and we love the burnin' blues groove and the way Muddy spits those tombstone bullets. Check it out.

MY JOHN THE CONQUER ROOT
(by Willie Dixon)

My pistol may snap, my mojo is frail
But i rub my root, my luck will never fail
When i rub my root, my John the Conquer root
Aww, you know there ain't nothin' she can do, Lord,
I rub my John the Conquer root
I was accused of murder in the first degree
The judge's wife cried, "Let the man go free!"
I was rubbin' my root, my John the Conquer root
Aww, you know there ain't nothin' she can do, Lord,
I rub my John the Conquer root
Oh, i can get in a game, don't have a dime,
All i have to do is rub my root, i win every time
When i rub my root, my John the Conquer root
Aww, you know there ain't nothin' she can do, Lord,
I rub my John the Conquer root

All Aboard The Buddy Miles Express – ‘Them Changes’ (1970)

Patients, free yer minds and stethoscopes because today the doctors and nursemaids here at the asylum are bringin’ the funk from the soulful sounds of Buddy Miles' 3rd album, Them Changes. (Side Doctor's Note: You could hide a collection of drum sticks and switchblades in that afro there).

In 1970, the former Band of Gypsys drummer released an 8-track LP filled with blasts of electric church music and combustible funk. Them Changes lasted 74 weeks on the Billboard album chart, but, unfortunately, soon after the run became a long lost classic. Recently our rock 'n roll stethoscopes unearthed this funk 'n soul gem that sounds like it was recorded at Stax or the Muscle Shoals studio.

Patients, let's be frank: Them Changes is filled with a collection of stingin' originals and, potentially, better than the originals covers. On the classic opener "Them Changes", rock 'n wailer Buddy Miles delivers a driving sonic flashpoint, with a groove that will knock you offa the rails. And his takes on Gregg Allman's "Dreams" and Neil Young's "Down By The River" will make yer stethoscopes drop. No joke, dig. Make sure to check out the LP and let us know yer thoughts.

The Ike & Tina Turner Revue's Scorchin' Debut Single: "A Fool In Love" (1960)

Patients, yesterday was the 60th anniversary of the release of the first 7" 45 rpm single. If yer a frequent visitor to the asylum then you know that the doctors and nursemaids here enjoy prescribin' a healthy dose of vintage digital 45 rpm singles. That's why today we are lendin' yer ears the soul chug from the debut single by the Ike & Tina Turner Revue.

A fool in love is still a fool

Released in 1960, the Sue Records single “A Fool In Love” b/w "The Way You Love Me" was the start of the funked-up Ike & Tina hit parade. The single rode the R&B charts all the way to #2 and hit #27 on the Pop charts. Leading up to this session, Anna Mae Bullock, then known as Little Ann was a member of the Ikettes. Ike had originally written "A Fool In Love" with a male vocalist in mind, but, a heavily pregnant Tina took over lead vocal duty when the singer scheduled to perform didn't show. The result, a dose of unrelentin' gravel jagged soul that sizzles with ferocious energy as it rakes through yer ears. The song marked the beginning of a succession of hits by the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Give 'er a listen and let us know yer thoughts patients.

Etta James & Sugar Pie DeSanto "In The Basement - Part One" (1966)

Today we have a razor sharp digital 45 from the double dealin' Chess-mates Etta James and the Sugar Pie DeSanto. This ditty has shades of back alley grit and Chicago-blues fire.

Oh, now tell us where can you party patients, all night long? That's right patients, in the asylum basement-that's where it's at.

Basically patients, what this comes down to is that this is one of those long lost stompers from yesteryears past that yer rock 'n roll stethoscopes are always yearnin' to find. On "In The Basement - Part One" Etta and her younger cousin, Sugar Pie go line for line-Etta sings a line and then Sugar Pie comes in and growls through her line. The doctors and nursemaids here at the asylum demand that you turn yerself on to the pistol whipped funk of "In The Basement - Part 1". Dig.

"In the Basement - Part 1" #37 U.S. R&B, #97 U.S. (1966)

Ike & Tina Turner Revue 'The Hunter' (1969)

Sock it to us patients. In 1969 the Ike & Tina Turner Revue recorded two blues drenched long-players for Bob Krasnow's Blue Thumb Records–Outta Season and The Hunter. Yeah, we can confirm that they both had some odd album art... Outta Season had Tina in white face while eatin’ a water melon and The Hunter captures Ike & Tina chilin' amongst some freaky deaky mannequins-Ike in his Beatle wig hat and Tina in her furry flip flops. Perfect attire for the mannequin hangin' crowd.

On The Hunter Ike & Tina blindslide the blues... Tina with her gritty howlin' wails and Ike bringin' his six-string rhythm/lead guitar violence front and center for some soarin' blues workouts. On the album they throw in a blizzrd of electric bombast on covers from Albert King, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Willis and Don Robey. But the standout track for the doctors and nursemaids here at the asylum has to be "Bold Soul Sister". It's one of those tracks that hits like a clap of thunder and knocks the blues-theme of the album off the rails. The track starts with Ike's funked-up barb-wired chargin' electricity, with Tina growlin' "Thangs and stuff and stuff and thangs and...and stuff. Dreamin’. I’m a Bold Soul Sister! BSS!" That's right patients, a BSS. Dig. Then the Ikettes swoop in with a "Bold Soul Sister." The track hit #59 on the Hot 100 and #22 on the R&B charts. Give it a listen patients and let us know what yer rock 'n roll stethoscopes think.

Sir Douglas Quintet "Medocino" 7" (1969)

Say ahhhh patients. Today we have a dose of magic medicine in the form of legendary lonestar groovers, the Sir Douglas Quintet. Indeed, a band the doctors and nursemaids have kept under lock 'n stethoscope for too long now. Doug Sahm is a name you should jot down patients. Sahm did, indeed, groove.

In '65, Sir Douglas Quintet scored an international smash with their classic Beatles meets Texas groove, "She's About A Mover". Later Sahm moved to San Francisco and recorded a handful of LPs for Mercury records subsidiary Smash. In 1969, SDQ released their third LP and the doctors' and nursemaids' favorite album in the SDQ catalog, Mendocino. Which, yes, patients includes an organ polished remake of "She's About A Mover". Mendocino is an album you should check out stat.

We wanted to leave you with Medocino's lead single. A pair of tunes where the Mexicali tinged minstrel shines. Check out "Medocino" b/w "I Wanna Be Your Mama Again" and let us know yer thoughts.

Catch their waves on Playboy After Dark.
