Ike & Tina Turner Revue 'The Hunter' (1969)

Sock it to us patients. In 1969 the Ike & Tina Turner Revue recorded two blues drenched long-players for Bob Krasnow's Blue Thumb Records–Outta Season and The Hunter. Yeah, we can confirm that they both had some odd album art... Outta Season had Tina in white face while eatin’ a water melon and The Hunter captures Ike & Tina chilin' amongst some freaky deaky mannequins-Ike in his Beatle wig hat and Tina in her furry flip flops. Perfect attire for the mannequin hangin' crowd.

On The Hunter Ike & Tina blindslide the blues... Tina with her gritty howlin' wails and Ike bringin' his six-string rhythm/lead guitar violence front and center for some soarin' blues workouts. On the album they throw in a blizzrd of electric bombast on covers from Albert King, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Willis and Don Robey. But the standout track for the doctors and nursemaids here at the asylum has to be "Bold Soul Sister". It's one of those tracks that hits like a clap of thunder and knocks the blues-theme of the album off the rails. The track starts with Ike's funked-up barb-wired chargin' electricity, with Tina growlin' "Thangs and stuff and stuff and thangs and...and stuff. Dreamin’. I’m a Bold Soul Sister! BSS!" That's right patients, a BSS. Dig. Then the Ikettes swoop in with a "Bold Soul Sister." The track hit #59 on the Hot 100 and #22 on the R&B charts. Give it a listen patients and let us know what yer rock 'n roll stethoscopes think.

Should You DL? Of course, as your Doctor, I advise you to download your daily dosage of MP3s...
