"Let's start what we have come into the room to do"...Patients, for today's post we wanted to take on the extended form and those revolutionary sounds from the afrobeat king, Fela Kuti. A man who took the sounds of James Brown and took them into the far reaches of funkdom.
For ages now we've wanted to introduce one of our personal favorite live albums Live! Fela Ransome-Kuti and the Africa '70 w/ Ginger Baker (1971) to all you patients out there in 115th Dreamland.
When we first heard the album it caught us off guard with it's hypnotic beats and driving throbbin' rhythms. The album starts with a shotgun blast of funk and continues to interlock it's African beats with jazz 'n soul throughout the entire length of this rocket fueled funked up LP.
You may think that it's quite unusual that ex-Cream and Blind Faith powerhouse drummer Ginger Baker takes hand in Fela's band. Don't worry patients Ginger fits right in with the afrobeat sounds. The only gripe that we have with the re-released mix is the saxophone solos are sittin' too far back in the mix.
If you have yet to hear the sounds of Fela we suggest you take a listen and get yer groove on. Doctors orders...
